Working as a research engineer and technical lead at DeepMind, Avishkar’s typical day is nothing like he expected. He starts by listening to a podcast or audiobook on his commute to the office, then focuses on emails and administration before diving into his first meeting for the day. His afternoons are usually spent preparing presentations, reading research papers, writing or reviewing code, and running experiments.
Interest in AI
During a course on intelligent agents at the University of Cape Town, Avishkar became fascinated with AI. This led him to advance his studies and eventually pursue a career in AI research and developmental work.

Avishkar is also an organizer and steering committee member of the Deep Learning Indaba, a movement to strengthen machine learning and AI in Africa.
