The development of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) is a big deal. These advanced systems combine language and visual processing, and can be used for image captioning and visual question answering. The problem is that these models require a lot of computational resources, which makes it hard to use them in different situations.
Now, researchers have created TinyGPT-V, a model that can do a lot without needing too much power. It only needs a 24G GPU for training and an 8G GPU or CPU for operation. This is possible because of its structure and using pre-trained visual modules. TinyGPT-V uses a base language model called Phi-2 with fewer than 13 billion parameters, and it reduces the amount of power it needs significantly.
One of the cool things about TinyGPT-V is that it’s good for using on devices with limited power. It has layers that help it understand pictures better, and because of that it can do lots of hard tasks without needing a lot of power. It’s been shown to do well in tests that are meant for bigger models, and it’s a good option for many real-life uses.
