A recent study conducted by researchers from MIT and Arizona State University reveals that people’s preconceived notions about an artificial intelligence agent significantly influence their interactions with it. The study focused on conversational AI agents, such as chatbots, and how users’ beliefs about their empathy, trustworthiness, and effectiveness affect their perception of these agents.

The researchers found that priming users with information about the AI agent’s characteristics—empathetic, manipulative, or neutral—had a direct impact on how users perceived the chatbot and shaped their communication with it. Surprisingly, even though users were interacting with the exact same chatbot, those who were told the agent was caring believed it to be empathetic and gave it higher ratings than those who were told it was manipulative.

The study also revealed a feedback loop between users’ perception of the AI agent and the agent’s responses. If users believed the AI to be empathetic, their conversations with the AI became more positive over time. On the other hand, users who believed the AI to be malicious experienced a decline in positive sentiment during their conversations.

According to Pat Pataranutaporn, a graduate student at MIT Media Lab, users’ beliefs about AI not only shape their mental model of the agent but also influence their behavior. This, in turn, affects how the AI responds. The study emphasizes the importance of studying how AI is presented to society, as media and popular culture play a significant role in shaping people’s perceptions.

The researchers also caution against the potential misuse of priming statements to deceive people about an AI’s motives or capabilities. They believe that AI’s success is not just an engineering problem but also a human factors problem. The way AI is described and named can have a profound impact on its effectiveness when used by people.

In the study, participants interacted with a conversational AI mental health companion and rated their experiences. The researchers randomly divided the participants into three groups and provided each group with a priming statement about the AI. One group was told the agent had no motives, the second group was told it was benevolent, and the third group was told it was malicious.

The results showed that priming statements strongly influenced participants’ mental models of the AI agents. Positive priming statements had a greater effect, with the majority of participants believing the AI to be empathetic or neutral. Negative priming statements had the opposite effect.

The researchers were surprised to find that users’ ratings of the chatbot’s effectiveness varied depending on the priming statements. Users in the positive group gave higher marks for mental health advice, even though all the agents were identical. The sentiment of conversations also changed based on priming, with users who believed the AI was caring interacting in a more positive way.

The study suggests that priming statements can make an AI agent appear more capable than it actually is, leading users to place excessive trust in it and potentially follow incorrect advice. The researchers suggest that people should be primed to be more cautious and aware of AI system biases. They also plan to explore how AI-user interactions would be affected if the agents were designed to counteract user biases.

It emphasizes the need to carefully consider how AI is presented and named to ensure users have realistic expectations and can make informed decisions.
