The Significance of 3D Meshes in Computer Graphics and Modeling

Three-dimensional (3D) meshes play a crucial role in computer graphics and 3D modeling. They find applications in various fields such as architecture, automotive design, video game development, and film production. A mesh is a digital representation of a 3D object, consisting of vertices, edges, and faces that define its shape and structure. The vertices represent the points where the edges meet, while the faces determine the object’s surface.

Creating 3D meshes is a challenging task that requires specialized artistic skills. It is not something an average person can do without proper knowledge. However, the internet provides access to various datasets containing 3D objects crafted by digital artists. While customization may be necessary, the editing process can be as difficult as creating meshes from scratch. This is where the problem of deforming meshes comes into the picture, attracting attention in computer graphics and geometry processing.

In many existing AI techniques, users can manipulate deformations through control handles, allowing coarse deformations that preserve details. These deformations are known as detail-preserving deformations. However, incorporating fine geometric information in 3D modeling can be time-consuming and complex, even for skilled artists.

To address this challenge, a novel AI approach called TextDeformer has been proposed. TextDeformer automates the deformation process of 3D meshes. It aims to transform a source shape into a target shape while maintaining semantic consistency between the two. This approach utilizes text-guided generative techniques and NeRFs (Neural Radiance Fields), but it does not require 3D training data. Instead, the authors employ differentiable rendering with pre-trained image encoders like CLIP to adjust and optimize the geometry of rendered objects.

After deformation, the structure and properties of the source mesh are preserved, and the resulting geometry aligns with the text specifications. Unlike previous text-guided approaches, TextDeformer focuses specifically on the deformation task, modifying existing input shapes to create high-quality geometry that accurately reflects the source mesh. It can handle both low-frequency shape changes and high-frequency details, such as elongating a cow’s neck to transform it into a giraffe or adding scales to transform it into an alligator.

To ensure the resulting correspondences from the source shape to the target are continuous and semantically meaningful, the authors color the source mesh in the visualizations. The work presents examples of the produced results, including a comparison between TextDeformer and the state-of-the-art DreamFusion.
