Enhancing Large Language Models: Introducing the Hypotheses-to-Theories Framework

Large language models (LLMs) have proven to excel in reasoning tasks by using examples and intermediate steps. However, relying solely on the implicit knowledge within an LLM can lead to incorrect answers. To address this issue, a team of researchers from Google, Mila – Québec AI Institute, Université de Montréal, HEC Montréal, University of Alberta, and CIFAR AI Chair have introduced the Hypotheses-to-Theories (HtT) framework. This framework focuses on acquiring a rule library for LLM-based reasoning and consists of two stages: induction and deduction.

In the induction stage, an LLM generates and validates rules based on training examples using the Chain of Thought (CoT) technique. The rules produced are then refined to create a rule library. In the deduction stage, the LLM utilizes the acquired rule library for reasoning and answering test questions.

The researchers evaluated HtT by integrating it as an enhancement to existing few-shot prompting techniques. They assessed its performance on challenging multi-step reasoning problems and found that HtT enhanced the existing methods, resulting in increased accuracy ranging from 11% to 27%. The acquired rules can also be effectively transferred to different models and variations of the same problem, showcasing the potential of HtT in acquiring textual knowledge using LLMs.
