Empowering Communities with AI Education
The Story of Jospin Hassan and ADAI Circle
Jospin Hassan, a resident of the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi, saw the potential of data science and artificial intelligence in creating job opportunities and addressing local challenges in his community. Inspired by his own drive for education, Hassan founded ADAI Circle, an organization that offers mentorship and education programs for youth and job seekers in the refugee camp.
MIT Refugee Action Hub (ReACT) and Emerging Talent
Hassan’s journey began when he joined the Certificate Program in Computer and Data Science from MIT Refugee Action Hub (now part of Jameel World Education Lab at MIT Open Learning). This program provided him with high-quality computer science and data analysis coursework from MITx, professional skill building, and opportunities for networking with global innovators.
Today, ADAI Circle’s curriculum includes classes in data science, AI, software development, and hardware design, along with an annual hackathon modeled after MIT Bootcamps. Hassan’s vision is to bridge the AI gap and empower underserved communities with technology and innovation.
Bridging the AI Gap with Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE)
In collaboration with MIT Open Learning’s RAISE program, ADAI Circle piloted a project-based AI curriculum for middle school students. The Responsible AI for Computational Action (RAICA) curriculum equipped students with AI skills for chatbots and natural language processing, aligning with ADAI Circle’s mission of reaching unmet communities through AI education.
Through feedback sessions with MIT experts, ADAI Circle teachers are helping shape culturally and technologically inclusive AI education resources. The ultimate goal is to make AI education accessible worldwide and empower students with limited access to technology.
Despite facing challenges, like limited resources and infrastructure, ADAI Circle continues to make a difference in the lives of its students and the community. With a focus on hands-on learning, collaboration, and community impact, Hassan and his team are paving the way for a brighter future through AI education.
