Researchers have created a new robot that mimics the two-handed movements of caregivers when dressing individuals. Previous assistive dressing robots had only one arm, which was uncomfortable and impractical for those in need of assistance.

Two-Armed Robot Assistance

Dr. Jihong Zhu from the University of York proposed a two-armed assistive dressing robot to provide more comfortable and effective support. This approach was inspired by caregivers who demonstrated the specific actions needed to reduce discomfort and distress for those being dressed.

Significance in Social Care

This new technology could revolutionize the social care system by allowing caregivers to spend less time on practical tasks and more time focusing on the health and well-being of individuals. The robot observed and learned from human movements to develop a model that mimics the actions of caregivers.

“This method, called learning from demonstration, allows the robot to learn the necessary actions from a human demonstration. Care-workers often need two hands to dress individuals properly, with one hand guiding and the other assisting with the garment,” said Dr. Zhu.

The team also developed algorithms to make the robot’s movements flexible and responsive to human touch, ensuring safe and efficient interactions. Further research will focus on testing the robot’s safety limitations and acceptance by those in need of assistance.

This groundbreaking research was a collaboration between researchers from the University of York, TU Delft, and Honda Research Institute Europe, funded by the Honda Research Institute Europe.
