The DDFS method utilizes a cost volume based on the input focal stack, camera settings, and a lens defocus model to establish depth hypotheses and cost values for pixels. It also uses an encoder-decoder network to estimate the scene depth progressively in a coarse-to-fine manner.

The researchers carried out experiments comparing DDFS with other depth from focus/defocus methods, and DDFS showed superior performance across multiple image datasets. Additionally, DDFS also proved efficient even with limited input images in the focal stack.

Overall, DDFS is a promising approach with wide applications in robotics, autonomous vehicles, 3D image reconstruction, and virtual and augmented reality systems. This innovative method offers a potential solution to the challenges of depth estimation in computer vision.
