AlphaFold Takes the Science World by Storm
It’s been a year since DeepMind released AlphaFold, their AI system that predicts the 3D structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence. This breakthrough has had a major impact on scientific research and discovery. Today, they’re announcing a huge update to the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database, partnering with EMBL-EBI to release predicted structures for over 200 million known proteins. This update will expand the database and provide researchers with valuable information on various biological issues such as sustainability, food insecurity, and neglected diseases.
AlphaFold has already been accessed by more than half a million researchers, and the open-sourced code has been cited over 4000 times. It has become an essential tool for biologists and clinicians to study diseases, accelerate drug discovery, and advance scientific exploration. This new release of predicted protein structures marks just the beginning of the impact that AlphaFold will continue to have on scientific discovery and human health.
