Google Research’s AI AI system is capable of diagnostic dialogues that enhance medical care. The new Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer (AMIE) is an AI research system optimized for diagnostic reasoning and conversations. AMIE was trained and evaluated using a simulated diagnostic dialogue environment. The randomized study design evaluated diagnostic conversations, history-taking, diagnostic accuracy, clinical management, clinical communication skills, relationship fostering and empathy. AMIE outperformed primary care physicians (PCPs) on multiple diagnostic dialogue axes. However, the study has limitations as the data contains ambiguous language and the research prototype evaluated is not representative of actual clinical practices. This research study is just a first step toward further exploration and research on AI’s value to clinicians.
